Призвал Господь однажды сто ангелов к Cебе.
По лесенке на землю отправил их с небес.
И принести оттуда Господь им повелел,
Все лучшее, что только найдется на Земле.
По лесенке прозрачной, как звездные лучи,
Спускались осторожно сто ангелов в ночи.
И разошлись, простившись, по весям — кто куда,
Исполнить послушанье, что Сам Господь им дал.
Вот девяносто девять вернулись точно в срок,
И принесли немало они земных даров.
И ангел запоздалый принес подарок свой.
Лежала на ладони слезинка у него.
Склонив главу смиренно, он Господу сказал:
«Увидел я, как грешник молился и стенал.
Молил он о прощении и плакал о грехах,
И вот его слезинка теперь в моих руках».
Была она похожа на райскую росу —
И радовался глядя Господь на ту слезу.
И молвил в умилении Творец и Царь миров:
«Мне грешника слезинка дороже всех даров».
Lyrics translation
The Lord once called a hundred angels to Him.
He sent them down a ladder to earth from heaven.
And the Lord commanded them to bring it from there,
All the best that can be found on Earth.
On a ladder transparent as star rays,
A hundred angels descended cautiously in the night.
And they parted, saying good-bye, on their way-who to where,
To fulfill the obedience that the Lord himself gave them.
That's ninety-nine is back just in time,
And they brought a lot of earthly gifts.
And the belated angel brought his gift.
There was a tear on his palm.
Bowing his head humbly, he said to the Lord:
"I saw a sinner praying and wailing.
He begged for forgiveness and wept for his sins,
And now his tear is in my hands."
It was like the dew of Paradise —
And the Lord was glad when he looked at that tear.
And the Creator and King of the worlds said in emotion:
"A sinner's tear is dearer to me than all gifts."
