Говорили потом, что он быстро старел,
Черным стал, позабыв, что когда-то был бел,

The grey-haired angel came to me in the morning.
He was ill, tossing about in a hot delirium.
He called me to heaven or hell,
All asked — " Choose!"
He burned his wings on the way to me,
Buried his soul in the sacred ashes,
Indifference of oncoming eyes
I took it for a refusal.
He was kind, he cried when he met evil.
He wanted to take me and wrap me in warmth.
I didn't open the frozen door for him,
I told him, " Not now!"
It was said later that he was aging rapidly,
He turned black, forgetting that he had once been white,
What of the house where my angel lived,
The devil came out yesterday wild, lame.
He disappeared into the darkness, but the rumor went on,
That he dragged two white wings on the ground.
