Любил один философ размышлять,
Гуляя в предрассветный час у моря,
О смысле жизни, радости и горе,
О том, зачем нам жить и умирать.
Однажды ночью был большой прилив —
На пляже он хозяйничал без меры —
Но наступил отлив, и вдруг весь берег
Усыпан стал плеядой звёзд морских.
И звёзды, оказавшись без воды,
Под солнцем обречённо высыхали,
Прощаясь с жизнью, горестно вздыхали
И ждали неминуемой беды.
Философ думал: так и наша жизнь
В одно мгновенье может оборваться.
Наверное, не стоит и пытаться
Разгадывать по звёздам высший смысл.

A philosopher liked to think,
Walking in the predawn hour by the sea,
About the meaning of life, joy and sorrow,
About why we should live and die.
One night there was a big tide —
On the beach, he was overbearing —
But the tide was out, and suddenly the whole coast
Strewn with a galaxy of sea stars.
And stars without water,
Under the sun they dried up,
Saying goodbye to life, they sighed bitterly
And waited for the inevitable trouble.
The philosopher thought: so is our life
