Видят, как стоит у ручья девица, красотою может ослепить,
Длинный сарафан намочить боится — в воду не решается ступить.
Тут монах, не размышляя, вырастает перед ней,
Осторожно поднимает и несёт через ручей.

И молитва вновь устремилась к Богу, закрутились чётки под рукой.
Так шагали черноризцы, лишь дыханья слыша звук,
И у врат у монастырских говорит послушник вдруг:
— Нет, ты, брат, скажи, чтоб не быть соблазну, как коснуться женщины ты мог?
Разве ты обет свой давал напрасно, как теперь на это смотрит Бог?
И монах, глаза прищурив, улыбнулся, глядя вдаль:
-Ты поднял в стакане бурю, — он послушнику сказал, —
Помыслы твои все Господь читает, так что, обрати к себе свой взор
Я её давно у ручья оставил, ты — несёшь с собою до сих пор.
