Durchlöchert ist das ganze Segel,
Fetzen nur flattern von ihm im Winde.
Die Anker halten nicht…
Und bricht die Sturzsee über das Schiff, so schwand
Ihm jede Lust am Kampfe mit Sturm und Meer:
Man meint, die Klippe in der Tiefe
Schlägt es bald leck und zerbricht’s in Trümmer.
In solchem Seesturm treibt unser Schiff dahin.

No longer can I comprehend the wind's strife:
For a wave is rolling from here,
From there the other. We amid drifts in the storm
On black ships.
The storm brought us into dire need.
Waves are already beating high above board and Deck,
The whole sail is perforated,
Shreds only flutter from it in the wind.
The anchors do not hold…
And if the sea of falls breaks over the ship, so vanished
To him every desire to fight with storm and sea:
One thinks the cliff in the depth
If it soon hits a leak and breaks it into rubble.
In such a sea storm our ship drifts.
